After reading Batman Hush, some comments about this series had come to mind and were pleading to be written. Smallville Season 5 was special (for me) because “Spike”—my favorite vampire in Buffy the Vampire Slayer—had joined the casts as Brainiac a.k.a Professor Milton Fine. Clark was back as a college student after four seasons of high school, unlike Unyil who seemed to be an-ever-faithful elementary school student. And another JLA superhero, Aquaman, was gonna made an appearance in one of the episodes (after an enjoyable episode of Clark meeting adolescence The Flash in the fourth season).
The season itself didn’t really serve much purposes for me, other than a part of story had to be told in order to get to the end. Lana Lang was as always got too much unnecessary parts of the episodes, having her adventure as a vampire, “drug” junky, on-and-off relationship with Clark, batting her eyelashes through every moment… (Boy, what do I have against this girl anyway? Hehehe) There was a long waited plot about Lana Lang that I’m glad finally got the chance to be visualized though: the love affair between her and Lex Luthor. Must admit, have seen the sparks between them since the first season.
My most unforgettable episode was probably Thirst. Lana Lang became a vampire after being blooded by Buffy Sanders (Does the name ring a bell for you? Hehe). And then in this episode, when Clark visited vampire-bitten Chloe at the hospital, Professor Fine (James Marsters—Spike) met him and ask:
“What had happened to her?”
Clark answered, “She has been bitten by a vampire.”
Then “Spike” said, with a really earnest face, “There was no such thing as vampire, Clark…”
I really loved that part! Haha. There were also some other witty dialogues between the casts, such as when Clark said, “I don’t think I can live as a reporter like you, Chloe.” Or when Lois said, “Me? Smallville’s girlfriend? Not in this life time!”
Speaking about Lois, her part was also a bit too-much exploited, in the physical appeal’s department. There were a lot of her flat tummy’s scenes in this season. I kept on waiting for some romantic spark between Clark and Lois, but alas, the waiting was not fruitful. Maybe on this season Lois was still in the bad-boy phase, so there’s no way that she’s gonna find Clark attractive. Funny, how she didn’t fall for Lex, though… ;-p
Some interesting notes from the season:
- Superman’s Fortress of Solitude, first seen in Superman the movie
- The death of Jonathan Kent
- Black kryptonite
- General Zod and Phantom Zone prisoners, also first seen in Superman I and II
- Chloe got a job at the Daily Planet
- Clark studied History in University of Metropolis
- Hmmm... anything else?
John Schneider (Jonathan Kent), Kristin Kreuk (Lana Lang), John Glover (Lionel Luthor), Annette O'Toole (Martha Clark Kent), Michael Rosenbaum (Alexander ('Lex') Joseph Luthor), Allison Mack (Chloe Sullivan), Tom Welling (Clark Kent/Kal-El of Krypton), Erica Durance (Lois Lane), James Marsters (Professor Milton Fine/Braniac)
