Movie: Pulp Fiction

Casts: John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, Uma Thurman
Directed by Quentin Tarantino

Finally saw what the fuss was all about. My cousin who is a film student definitely urged me to check this one out. After watching it, I kind of understood his enthusiasm. This movie is definitely, if I am allowed to be a little gender-minded here, boy’s movie! Hahaha. Although I spent a lot of time in trying to understand the dialogues which were basically “lack in vocabulary”—the English subtitle was not much of a help, every other sentences were primarily consisted of the f-word and the mf-word—I get to imagine boys quoting the characters’ words or mimicking the characters’ ways of talking.

The story pretty much revolved around Vincent Vega (Travolta), Jules (Jackson), and Butch (Willis). Vincent and Jules were Mr. Wallace’s hit men—a fearsome gangster’s leader who likes to refer his men as “his nigger”. Butch was a boxer who dares to cheat his deal with Mr. Wallace. Uma Thurman played as Mrs. Wallace whom Vega referred to as “a test of loyalty”.

The story itself didn’t really give us new potential conflict or anything, but the way Tarantino told the story… that was another matter. If you’re patient enough to sit and watch the fifteen minutes or so-didn’t seem like were gonna go no where-dialogues, you’ll get to enjoy some serious treat in storytelling. Tarantino flipped around the already known conventional story line until he created a “new” movie, which gave Vincent and Jules a nice cool exit from the screen. And THAT, I totally dig!
