TV Drama: All About Eve

Casts:
Jang Dong-Gun, Chae-Rim, Han Jae-Seok, Kim So-Yeon; Drama, Romance (2000); Language: (supposed to be) Korean

My endurance alarm finally blared its red alert siren at the seventh episode. This derama was just not my cup of tea. You see, when watching Korean movie/derama, I usually have this flexible endurance to the bad story, dragging story line, cheesy dialogues, not so appealing casts, or anything else you can name that will be against you for watching a show, because I like hearing the hangukmal for hearing practice. Everything just failed me when discovering that this derama I was borrowing from a friend was dubbed into Chinese. And the fact that I have almost zero sympathy for Chae-Rim’s character didn’t help.

The story was basically about the rivalry of two girls played by Chae-Rim and Kim So-Yeon. The two girls were described as two opposite poles of characters. Chae-Rim was the cute, innocent, not so bright but hard working girl, enjoying years of happiness surrounded by people who loves her: her father, her mother’s sister, and an oppa (a cousin played by Han Jae-Seok who adored her like a sister. And this was the problem for this girls’ perfect life; she loves her cousin not as a brother.)

Kim So-Yeon played a girl who has encountered the worst of bad in life. Left by her abusive-alcohol addict- father with tons of debt, she sought refugee in the kindness of Chae-Rim’s dad. Although at a while this cause some prejudice about their relationship, this problem was soon replaced by other that’s more disturbing for Chae Rim: her oppa seemed to have fallen for So-Yeon.

So-Yeon was prepped to be the perfect antagonist not only by her dark-filthy background (she was still chased by her ex who happened to be a mafia or some sort, and had worked as a karaoke hostess in the past). She was also getting the spiteful, manipulative, ambitious, and cunning attitude, willing to do anything to get her way. The funny thing was I actually rooting for this supposedly antagonist. Every move she made to make Chae-Rim’s life miserable felt to be well deserved, while Chae-Rim‘s efforts to gain any bit of happiness were totally bored me to death, even when Jang Dong-Gun’s character came and gradually manipulated the scenes. Weird.

Anyway, as I said before, I drew the line at the seventh from its long twenty or so episodes. Maybe one day, when I found its un-dubbed version I will consider watching it again. Maybe…

I agree with your opinion.

Chae Rim's character was a bit too plain and boring. (sinetron type of good girl?)

The bad girl was way better in term of professionalism. Check out how she continued to be on air despite the appendicitis.

As I watched, I thought: HEY! Who's the leading role here?

Wow, Batata, you've watched the derama until the end? Do you think it was worth enduring until the last episode? If so, I will try to find somebody else who would lend it to me... the un-dubbed version of it, of course ;-p

Well, unless you are a HUGE fan of Jang Dong Gun (which I do), I think you can bare seeing the cast until the end.

6 out of 10 points from me.

But let me give you a spoiler (you're free to delete this comment if you don't want to know. Hahaha ..)

the bad girl turned good (sort of) the good girl married the rich guy. The lame big brother died.
*ooops, sorrryyyyy*

Hehehe, thanks for the info, Batata.
Well, it's settled then.. I am not Jang Dong-Gun's HUGE fan. Like him in Taegukgi, though.

Yunee, ternyata All About Eve diputer lagi di JakTV, tiap hari Selasa, Rabu, Kamis, kalo gak salah, jam 20.00. Bahasa Korea, lagi. Asyikkk, gue coba ngikutin deh...

Kalo pameran, editor emang gak semua turun lapangan, yang tugas aja. Hehehe.

Thx
